Teaching Medicine Wheels "Sacred Circles" (iii)

Medicine Wheel Philosophy

The Medicine Wheel is an ancient symbol which embodies the Circle of Life.
The circle mirrors the organization of the universe; the four seasons, the four directions (common to indigenous people of N and S America) the four elements, the four symbolic races or tribes of people, the four aspects of self, the four seasons of our life, the animal symbols for each direction etc.. It stresses the integration of the 'whole'.
There are many different ways that this symbol can be used to express important, holistic ideas. For example, the Medicine Wheel teaches us we have four aspects to our nature: the mental, the physical, the emotional, and the spiritual. Aboriginal philosophy stresses harmony and these aspects of self must be equally developed in a healthy, well-balanced individual.
