The Powers of the Four Directions

Medicine Wheels depict the Cycle of Life, also, the calendar of the seasons as well as of our lives.

The circle has no beginning, no ending - it is a process of 'becoming'. The Medicine Wheel is divided into four quadrants. Four is a powerful number in the Indian way.

The powers ascribed to the four directions are:

East

Spring

South

Summer

West

Autumn

North

Winter

 

Child/Youth

Red Tribe

Earth/Soil

Physical/Body

Eagle

 

Adult

Yellow Tribe

Fire/Sun

Mental/Mind

Jumping Mouse

 

Grandparent

Black Tribe

Water

Emotional/Heart

Bear

 

Elder

White Tribe

Air

Spiritual/Soul

White Buffalo

The four cardinal directions East, South, West and North are represented on uhe Medicine Wheel chart.

Also, the seasons, with Spring to the East, Summer to the South, Autumn to the West and Winter to the North. The colours are respectively, E = red, S = Yellow, W = Black, and N = White.
