The Four Aspects of Self

The Medicine Wheel teaches us that it is important to maintain a healthy balance between fee four aspects of self, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. It is difficult to separate one aspect of self from the others, as they are interconnected and interdependent, and influence each other. As stated earlier, each aspect of self must be equally developed to be a healthy, well-balanced individual. For instance, your emotions can cause you to become ill.

Physical/Body:
We need to be aware of our bade and the need to live a healthy life style, to exercise, to eat a balanced diet, as this is necessary for good health.

Emotional/Heart:
It is good to be aware of how our emotions contribute to either our well-being or ill health. It is a well known fact that prolonged negative emotions can result in disease. It is important to express our feelings in a good way, and have a healthy outlet for our emotions.

Mental/Mind
Involves our mental and reasoning abilities. It is good to find balance between mental and physical exertion. This helps to provide release from the stress which comes from long periods of studying, bookwork, etc..

Spiritual:
To be aware of a Power greater than ourselves. To give thanks for all that we receive from the earth, and to work towards the continued well being of all the other forms of life that we share Creation with. We share the great life force/energy fields with everything else that exists. Many cultures believe that a universal energy - sometimes call qi [chi] in China, prana [prahna] in India or ki [ki] in Japan - the Great Spirit, (or other name depending on the tribe) by the native Indian people, flows constantly through all life forms. This energy flows through the universe and the earth in the same way that it flows through the human body. We are all connected by this flow of energy.
